NOSSA's position on hGH use in short but otherwise healthy children
The National Organization of Short Statured Adults, does not support the use of hGH in short but otherwise healthy kids.
The National Organization of Short Statured Adults, does not believe you are a "bad" parent if you are thinking about giving or have given your child human growth hormone treatments. We understand that you love your child and are only doing what you believe is best for your child.
But we believe that medically altering your child, so that he or she does not have to face the social prejudice known as heightism, is wrong. Your child should not be made to feel that there is something "wrong" with him or her because he or she is shorter than other kids.
Giving children growth hormones does three things: 1) Gives in to a social prejudice instead of combating it; 2) Stigmatizes a child who might otherwise be psychologically healthy and 3) Puts the children at risk of future health problems for two or three inches and at a significant cost. These children may experience headaches, scoliosis, diabetes (HGH counters the affects of insullin), heart disease, acromegaly (oversized bones in the hands and feet etc.). Growth hormone should only be given for medical purposes (GHD, Turners syndrome, dwarfism). It really isn't advisable for children who are not deplete in growth hormone to take more.
If you are concerned that your child will face heightism because of his or her stature, please consider joining our organization and helping us to educate the public about heightism and in doing so, helping to minimize it's damaging effects. To join NOSSA, click here.
